The Caged Bird

Behind the bars you hear my despair,

Screeching for freedom in the open air.

Far away up in the sky I see,

My friends are chirping in melody.

Morsel by Morsel I now devour,

The fragments thrown to me seemed a favour.

I crave my freedom of perching on branch to tree,

Savouring the sweetness of the fruits that are free.

My wings are trimmed like my dream,

But out in the world they would gleam.

Caged for fun though I prefer to run,

Opened wings flapping under the gleaming sun.
